Chinese
Book on Hong Kong Harmonica History (updated on
4 June 2005)
|
| Whether the current generation know it or
not, harmonica was a mainstream of the harmonica education in Hong
Kong. Harmonica is affordable, portable, and easy to learn. It
is also a very popular and touching musical instrument. In the
difficult era of 1950s and 1960s in Hong Kong, harmonica was the only
musical instrument for the ordinary people to get in touch with
music.
The book "Seventy Years of Hong Kong Harmonica" gives an
account of the development of harmonica in Hong Kong for the past 70
years. More than a dozen of interviews with well-known harmonica
players were conducted and documented, including pupils of masters
Leung Yat-chiu and Fung On, Mr. Ho Kit-fun and the King's Harmonica
Quintet. The book also carries articles written by harmonica players
and composers, about how they were attached to this lovable musical
instrument.
The author Mr. Johnny Chan is a Director of the Hong Kong Harmonica
Association and a veteran harmonica player and researcher. Not only
does he like to play harmonica, but he likes to collect harmonicas and
MAKE harmonicas as well. He is well versed with the history of
harmonica, especially with its history in Hong Kong.
