About HKSPC
HKSPC is a young and independent charitable organisation. It was established in March 1999 at the initiative of Ocean Park following the arrival of a pair of Giant Pandas, An An and Jia Jia, gifted to the people of Hong Kong by China.
Led by its mission to ensure the survival of giant pandas, HKSPC strongly supports research studies based on the pandas and their habitat, as well as heightens awareness amongst the people of Hong Kong. Support and contributions of caring individuals and corporations make the work of HKSPC possible.
The Society currently has two major projects in Sichuan, one of which is to contribute funding to build a new research veterinary hospital at Wolong Nature Reserve, while the other is the adoption of Mabian Dafending Nature reserve. The latter project aims to help the local communities of the Mabian Dafending nature reserve to develop sustainably, to harmonise their needs and the needs of giant pandas for a protected area there they can thrive undisturbed.
About Wolong Nature Reserve
Amongst the 32 nature reserves established by the government of China, Wolong is one of the first and largest. The breeding centre was built in 1980 and operated as a small-scale rescue centre catering for the wild panda population in the near by mountains. Over the years, the Centre has gained a leading role in all aspects of panda research, with distinctive achievement in panda breeding. The Centre boasts a remarkable record of over 32 panda births since 1991.
Currently, a new research veterinary hospital is being built at the Centre. HKPSC is proud to be a part of this project which furthers the growth and leadership of the Centre in panda breeding, research and conservation.
