Chaos Seed: Game Review

Chaos Seed was released by Taito last spring.

It is a highly innovative game which combines elements of sim-city type games, action RPG and some role-playing.

The game consists of many (largely) individual scenarios. The player plays a Cave Master in a Chinese fantasy setting. The Cave Master designs and creates his own dungeon using eight kinds of rooms, and corridors. He summons "enchanted animals" patterned after the twelve birth signs of China. There is a unique "fung-shui" system loosely based on the five traditional Chinese elements of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood.

Graphics are good, and the music is excellent (both are among the best of SFC games). The story is quite intriguing, with some elements of dimensional and time travel.

The game play is rather complex. Japanese literacy requirement is high, and use of Kanji can be said as excessive. I highly recommend this game to experienced gamers who like innovative games, who like strategy-simulation games, and who have good Japanese and kanji literacy. For such players, the game offers over 100 hours of entertaining game play (according to my first-hand experience). However, this game is not recommended to novice players or players who can't understand any Japanese.
