Cotton 2 : Cheats and Codes

When you complete the game at a difficulty level (or above), an extra item appears in the option menu. It should be quite easy with all the continues, if you give yourself four lives per credit.

Easy : "Player" option
You can select whether Player 1 plays Cotton or Appli.
Normal : "Visual" option
You can turn off the intermissions, and the opening and especially the ending (since the ending normally isn't skip-able).
Hard : "Pad-XYZ" option
You can set controls for the XYZ buttons. "Rapid" means rapid auto-fire, corresponding to the buttons ABC respectively. (I doubt whether Y and Z are ever useful, but X definitely is.) "Command" allows you to execute command shots by pressing a single button. You can also use the L and R buttons to execute command shots. R-button does "Side Shot (Up)", and L-button throws a little bomb.
Hardest : "Sound Test" option
Only if you clear hardest with no continues.

You can select your initial element. By holding +-up, start, and one of A, B, or C in the opening story until the actual stage 1 begins, you will be equipped with 3 spells of the same element. A gives you fire, B gives you Ice, and C gives you Wind. By the way, my favorite is Fire.

You can access all extra options, plus a training mode (great for practicing for high scores) with the following command. Place the cursor over "Option" in the start menu, then press and hold X, Y, and Z. Now press and hold A, B, and C. (I find it easier to enter the command by holding X, Y, and Z, press and hold A or C, then press and hold the two other buttons half a second later.

Thanks to Raymond McKeithen II for telling me about this code.

If you clear the game with no continues, in the ranking screen that follows, some commands are listed on the wallpaper. One is the "select initial element" command mentioned above. The others are: (I'm using number pad notation to denote +-key directions)

664B
Detaches or attaches your option character (Silk or Needle). It makes a slight difference in your speed.
63214B
Catches an enemy and seals it at the same time.
66A
Throws a bomb (the same as the one fired by the L-button).
4646C
Discards a magic spell without firing it. You might want to use it to change elements, since a spell would destroy crystals and seals.
46A4A632A
A "combo" command, allowing you to fire off three command shots in quick succession.
8963214782A+B+C
The "suicide" command.

If you put the Cotton 2 CD into the CD-rom drive of your computer, you can find a file named Maniax.txt . It is a text file in Japanese explaining all the details about the rules of the game, such as the Newtonian physical data of the seals of the different elements.

Special thanks to Mr. Noritama, who maintains an excellent Cotton 2 homepage. Some of the information here has been completed with information therefrom. Also thanks to Mr. MIWA Hideaki for providing some information, and for introducing me to Mr. Noritama's page.
