New Super Mario Bros. [DS] ===================== Complete Unlockables Summary ---------------------------- written by Alan Kwan mailto:tarot@netvigator.com This little guide summarizes the unlockables you can gain by completing certain tasks in the game. Thanks to greenpickle for helping out. Save File Stars --------------- For clearing major tasks, you get some stars next to your save file. First star: - Earned by beating world 8 final stage - Enables you to save game anywhere - Wallpaper shop appears (see below) Second star: - Earned by clearing all 80 stages (any stage which has 3 star coins, excluding toadstool houses and cannons). You just need to clear each stage once, through any one exit (or boss). - Grants infinite re-use of all toadstool houses Third star: - Earned by completely unlocking everything in the game. - Requires clearing every exit (black flag, red flag, boss) of all 80 stages to open all paths on the map (including stage 7-6 normal exit) - Requires "star coin all clear" (see below) - Requires you to actually use all 5 cannons. Using a cannon changes its color dot from red to blue. (You don't have to actually use toadstool houses or warp pipes, though you must unlock them all.) - The only thing you don't have to do: you do not have to clear stage 5-castle with both Mini-Mario and another form; you just have to clear it once (since you can access the other world through a cannon). You do have to clear stage 2-castle with both forms (since there are no cannons warping to world 3 or 4). - Since you have already unlocked everything, you don't get any extra rewards besides the star itself. Wallpaper shop -------------- The wallpaper shop appears next to stage 1-1 after you beat the final boss in world 8. Initially, besides your default wallpaper, the shop offers 3 new wallpapers for sale at 20 star coins each. You can also freely switch between any wallpapers in your possession. The 4th new wallpaper becomes available after you spend the 5 star coins for every of the 32 "5 star coin" road signs in the game. This is actually a foolproof feature, to prevent the player from deadlocking a stage (and its star coins) behind a road sign after spending elsewhere all star coins he has access to. If you want to get the 4th new wallpaper earlier, spend your star coins to open all the road signs before spending them on the other wallpapers. Star Coin Complete / All Clear ------------------------------ When you collect all the star coins in a world, a "star coin complete" mark apears in the lower screen while you are in that world. When you collect all 240 star coins in the game, and use them all (on all 32 road signs and 4 new wallpapers), the star coin counter in the upper screen is replaced by the "star coin all clear" mark. Tips ---- Focus on getting the second save file star first, before working too hard on difficult star coins and secret exits. Infinite re-use of toadstool houses is a huge convenience. Some star coins and secret exits require Shell or Mini, and the toadstool house is usually the most convenient source of these items. Especially, if you are at a mid-stage check point, playing another stage to get items would erase your progress. Also, don't forget that the Mega Mushroom can make certain tasks much easier. Every veteran Mario player should have known this: you can aim for the item you want from the item roulette boxes (in red toadstool houses and in certain stages) by good timing.
