(hereafter referred to as "Zung Jung works") are copyrighted material.
The copyright belongs to me, Alan Kwan. This article explains the terms which
persons and organizations must obey when using "Zung Jung works".
Free-of-Charge Use Conditions
Personal use: Permission is granted for individuals to use "Zung
Jung works" for non-commercial personal/family entertainment purposes,
without notifying me. For such purpose, one may make and distribute (but not
sell) a few copies of "Zung Jung works", with a maximum limit of 8 copies of
each article within any 28-day period. If you need to make more copies than
this number, you must notify me and get my permission first.
Mahjong interest club:
A "mahjong interest club" is defined as a non-commercial organization with the
honest purpose of promoting mahjong as an interest activity. A mahjong
interest club needs to notify me before using "Zung Jung works". Use of "Zung
Jung works" will usually be granted to the club free of charge, but a small
fee may be charged for copying and distributing of "Zung Jung works".
(This charge can be waived if the club instructs its members to individually
download "Zung Jung works" from this website for printing, instead of the club
itself performing the copying and distributing of "Zung Jung works".)
Board game club:
A "board game club" is defined as a non-commercial organization with the honest
purpose of promoting a variety of board games and card games as an interest
activity. A board game club may use "Zung Jung works" occasionally as outlined
under "personal use" above. If the club wants to use "Zung Jung works" for its
regular activity, it needs to notify me; the terms of use would be similar to
those outlined under "Mahjong Interest club" above.
Charitable, educational, religious, or social service
organization:
A charitable, educational, religious, or social service organization
which wants to use "Zung Jung works" should notify me. Depending on the nature
of the activity, such use may be free-of-charge or for a small fee.
Senior home, medical rehabilitation facility:
A senior home or medical rehabilitation facility or a similar establishment
which wants to use "Zung Jung works" should notify me.
If such use is for the honest purpose of recreation for seniors or medical
rehabilitation, it may be free-of-charge or for a small fee.
I reserve the right to withdraw or alter the above terms at any time.
In particular, once "Zung Jung works" are published in a book authored by me
and available for public sale, permission for free-of-charge use will
be withdrawn immediately.
Employment
I am available for full-time or part-time employment for the following
duties:
Mahjong competition rules-writing
Mahjong competition judge
Mahjong class instructor
In-person presentation of "Zung Jung"
Mahjong article writer / columnist
Advice and planning of mahjong activities
The above list is not exhaustive.
Charge for Use
For the following organizations, use of "Zung Jung works" can be granted for
a charge. Please consult me.
Major mahjong competiton:
A mahjong competition with huge prize money which wants to use "Zung Jung
works" should employ me as Rules Director or Head Judge. Terms are negotiable.
For solely the use of "Zung Jung works" and no other service, the standard
charge would be 0.5% of the total prize pot (for a huge prize pot).
Mahjong parlor, casino:
A mahjong parlor or a casino which wants to use "Zung Jung works" should employ
me as part-time advisor. For mahjong parlors within Hong Kong SAR, I will
provide two 5-hour visits per month (for instruction of Zung Jung, but I will
not be involved in any money wagers) for HK$3000 wages per month.
Mahjong game program:
For any mahjong game program in electronic form, including computer games,
video games, electronic games, mobile phone games, etc. which wants to use
"Zung Jung works" should employ me as advisor/supervisor.
Terms are negotiable.
Official mahjong body:
An official mahjong body with a commerical purpose (such as, one which runs
official competitions with significant prize money) which wants to use
"Zung Jung works" should employ me as part-time advisor.
Terms are negotiable.
Mahjong tile maker: For a mahjong tile maker which wants to package
"Zung Jung works" together with the tiles for sale, I will charge writer's
commissions for such use.
Terms are negotiable.
Mahjong book writer / publisher:
For a mahjong book writer or publisher who wants to include "Zung Jung works"
in their publication, I will charge 'standard' writer's commissions for such
use. Please consult me.
The above list is not exhaustive.
Trademark Issues
「中庸 (Zung Jung)」 is a trademark I am using for the mahjong scoring
system. Its registration in Hong Kong is pending.
Any person or organization may not use "Zung Jung" for any mahjong-related
commercial or industrial purpose without my permission.
I reserve the right to take legal proceedings against any infringement of the
trademark.
Political Standpoint
The use of "Zung Jung mahjong scoring system" to promote "international
friendship", "international cultural exchange" and "world peace" is welcome.
For organizations which honestly work towards such goals, a discount or waiver
of the fees may be given.
Any political party or political idea which want to use "Zung Jung
mahjong scoring system" or "Zung Jung works" for their promotion must notify me
and get my consent beforehand.
