Preface
On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong and its six million plus
inhabitants will enter a new era under Beijing rule. Certainly the fact
that the end of British rule in Hong Kong should be celebrated across the
territory. However, it is not China that is resuming sovereignty over Hong
Kong, but rather a China that is under the yoke of an authoritarian regime.
Therefore, Hong Kong is not returning to the motherland, but rather coming
under Pekinese Occupation. Bearing this in mind, I have composed these
theses in the hope that there could be a better future for both Hong Kong
and China. Unlike Taiwan's fight for pragmatic diplomacy, what Hong Kong
must fight for is its right for pragmatic self-sovereignty!
The modified version of the present flag of Hong Kong does not reflect
a yearning for a continuation of British rule, but rather symbolizing the
adamant stand against Pekinese Occupation.
The new Hong Kong flag is a politically-
neutral reflection of Hong Kong. It carries a design of a bauhinia with
a pearl on each one of its petals on a blue background. The blue background
and the bauhinia both represent Hong Kong. The pearls further symbolize
Hong Kong and imply that Hong Kong is the Pearl of the Orient. The five
colours of red, yellow, blue, white and black on the pearls depict the
politically-neutral flag of China with the five stripes of the same colours
used during the early years of the Republic of China; confirming that the
eventual goal of a unified China is common in every Chinese. Regrettably,
I have not translated these theses into Chinese because I understand the
limitations of my command of the Chinese language; a stark contrast to
some Hong Kong business leaders who have made a mess in their translations
of criticisms they have made against Patten following the latter's visit
to North America.
Feel free to send me any comments regarding
these theses to my email address given below. Unlike some people in Beijing,
I am open to comments and criticisms.
