Hongkonger Bill Butcher was Founding Director of the Language Centres at the IVE, and is now an independent writer and property restorer. Previously, he worked at Oxford and the ENA (Paris).

His main research area is the nineteenth-century French novelist Jules Verne, where he has published a million words and is the specialist most cited online. He is currently working on a critical edition.
