Resource Centre: Use of IT in Mathematics Teaching

This page provides secondary school teachers with resources of the use of IT in Mathematics teaching. I sincercely invite any teachers or visitors to contribute their teaching notes or worksheets or to share their experience on the use of IT. Please send any information or comments to Mr. W.K. Cheng.

(1) Dynamic Geometry

1.

Introduction of Dynamic Geometry

There are 2 typical examples of application of Dynamic Geometry in Mathematics teaching. There are also 4 practical exercises for teachers.

2.

Javasketchpad and Java Circles Version 1

There are more than 30 JAVA sketches which could be used directly for teachers' demonstration or students' exploration.

3.

Worksheets for teaching F.4 Circles

1st set (by Mr. W.K. Cheng) : It was prepared two years ago. Some of them should be modified according to the abilities of the students and the facilities of the school.

2nd set (by Dr. Y.L. Leung) : The handout includes a set of worksheets and a list of students' comments on using Cabri Geometry in Mathematics learning. I highly recommend this set of worksheets, prepared by Dr. Allen Y.L. Leung, to all F.4 teachers.

4.

Some Reflections on using Cabri as a Teaching Medium

(by Dr. Allen Y.L. Leung)

(2) WinGeom (3-D part)

1.

Introduction of WinGeom in 3 dimensional problems

There are some step-by-step procedures introducing the basic commands in 3-D WinGeom.

2.

Download sample files

Right click your mouse and choose "Save Link As" to download :

1. Sample Diagram 1 (97)

2. Sample Diagram 2 (98)

3.

Download WinGeom

(3) Spreadsheet

1.

Worksheets for teaching various forms

There are 6 examples showing how Excel could be used for teaching Mathematics. I used these examples for teaching my F.2 high-ability class after the final examination last year, but they could be used for higher forms too. They include maximization and minimization problems, mortgage loan and fixed deposit problems.

2.

Excel file for teaching F.1 - F.4 Mathematics in zip format

It is a compressed Excel file, which contains some examples for teaching F.1 - F.4 Mathematics. It was prepared by some teachers in a Mathematics seminar held by PTU and HKASME. The examples are about simultaneous equations, slope of straight lines, linear and quadratic functions and etc. They demonstrate some basic and useful uses of Excel, including plotting graphs, protection of worksheets, and etc.

(4) Graphmatica

1.

Introduction of Graphmatica

There are some step-by-step procedures introducing the basic commands in Graphmatica.

2.

Worksheets for teaching F.6 Functions

With the help of Graphmatica, some interesting functions could be investigated through visualization. Students are expected to draw their conjectures and to explain the properties of these functions.

3.
